Asanas or yoga poses are a large percentage of the training. We will focus on breaking down the techniques of each of the foundational postures so that you not only are able to deepen your own personal understanding but also share this knowledge with others. Each weekend we will spend time practicing postures such as standing poses, seats, twists, backbends, arm balances, & inversions. This training will provide you will the skills necessary to practice and teach these fundamental shapes. No prior mastery is required but we recommend that you have a minimum of 1 year of regular practice before taking on a training. We also require that you come to one drop-in class per week at Love Hive with Jessica and Audra during the course of the program.  All asana classes are taught by senior teachers with E-RYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teachers with Yoga Alliance) with well over 1,000 hours of teaching experience each.

We will cover the basics of human anatomy as well as look through the lens of yoga as it has its own intelligent system of understanding the human body. This module will help you investigate your practice from the inside, and develop authentic cues bases on experiential and practical anatomy.

Modules include lecture, activities, and discussion with an emphasis of understanding anatomy of the body and movement.

Love Hive's Yoga Teacher Training is deeply and richly infused with traditional and modern spiritual philosophy. During the training we will study the ancient yogic text of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali which is considered a fundamental guidebook on any yogis path towards deeper connection and understanding. These teachings date back to the 1st or 2nd century and have been passed on from teacher to student for hundreds of years. We will continue this tradition by using a mixed teaching format of partial lecture/partial group discussion to discover how this ancient text is still very revelent and essential in our modern lives. Our philosophy will focus on the first two padas or chapters of the Yoga Sutras and is meant to serve as a way to realize the vastness of this transformative practice.

The section portion of our philosophy will be taking the teachings and bringing them to life with practices and activities designed to practice mindfulness, self awareness, meditations, energy medicine, and connection with self, spirit, and community. The practices will be accessible and applicable to real life and will help to set up a grounded experience of the teachings that will hopefully fuel a lifelong curiosity and practice.

Teaching Methodology is the glue that holds the program together and brings you from the seat of the student to that of the teacher. We will examine ways to learn the poses in our bodies and then begin to articulate our findings into intelligent language so that we can instruct in clear and rooted ways. This is the section of the program where you learn to become a teacher. Expect topics such as sequence writing, lots of teaching practice, class themes, cueing, languaging, environment, ambiance, ethical roles of a teacher, yoga for social justice, & much more to be discussed and practiced during our Teaching Methodology sections on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Throughout the training we will be practicing various pranayama practices or breathing techniques as well as opportunities to practice and learn meditation practices. Students will have the tools to understand the basics of these techniques to start deepening their personal practice and add them into their yoga toolkit for continued exploration this terrain.

Trauma Informed Yoga and Resilience training is included in Love Hive's program because we believe that interweaving the teachings of resiliency into every class helps to foster an environment where healing work can be most successful. Our main focus in this section will be on the art of resilience however we will cover some of the basic concepts of how to better offer trauma informed class. We want to move in our teaching from a place rooted in dignity, empowerment, and integrity. We believe that creating opportunities to be able to practice resilience is how we move towards healing. There is no way to completely trauma-proof any kind of group experience, as we all will have various ways in which trauma can sneak in. Our goal is to be able to give trainees tools to use best practices in the enviroment, awareness in communication vs fear or avoidance, and encourage strength and personal empowerment both within the teacher and for their students.

Leading us in the talk on the neuroscience of trauma is Dr. Sarina Saturn, Phd in Neuroscience and specializing in compassion work and how trauma and mindfulness practices impact the brain. Sarina started her career studying the neurocircuitry of fear, stress, and depression, all of which can lead to devastating effects on mental and physical well-being.  During this work, she often mused about how inborn tendencies, life experiences, and social support may play a role in buffering or propagating the influences of negative emotion on health.  She uses a multi-method approach in her research and outreach by combining measures of life experiences, genetics, epigenetics, hormone release, and physiology to investigate how mindful and compassionate behaviors can help us heal from traumatic experiences and negative emotions.

Sarina Saturn (formerly Sarina Rodrigues) is faculty member in the Department of Psychological Sciences at University of Portland. She received her Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University under the mentorship of Joseph LeDoux. Her dissertation focused on molecular, cellular, and behavioral studies of the amygdala, the key brain structure for emotional processing. She was then a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University in Robert Sapolsky's laboratory where she investigated the role of stress hormones on the brain's emotional circuitry. At the University of California, Berkeley, Saturn was a postdoctoral fellow for the Greater Good Science Center and Dacher Keltner and here she began her endeavors to bridge neuroscience and social psychology. Her current research centers on the biology underlying prosocial emotions and behaviors.
