Let's get in formation

" Okay, okay, ladies, now let's get in formation, cause I slay Okay, ladies, now let's get in formation, cause I slay Prove to me you got some coordination, cause I slay Slay trick, or you get eliminated "

So we are nominated as one of the top 5 yoga studios in Portland, Oregon by Willamette Weekly and we are pumped. The mantra being chanted is we came to SLAY! So get out there and vote y'all (here's the link:

In all seriousness, even being included on this list means so much to me and Audra Carmine. We have poured our heart and soul into this community and business and would do it all over again everyday because we feel like it is our calling. I love this song by Beyonce for lots of reasons. It may seem like the idea of slaying is not very yogic but I disagree. This idea is not new. This is the entire premise of The Bhagavad Gita, a calling by Krishna to Arjuna to seize his fullest potential, his dharma, his purpose in life even though that means he goes into battle with those he loves. I can't speak to all the many layers to this song but I do belief it is a calling out. To say, "I am here, unapologetic about who I am" and the awe-someness of stepping full hearted into your dharma and purpose. When we step out into the light of day to be visible as we are, we are stepping into the battlefield. Ready to hold onto our position and continue to be us regardless of if it makes others feel uncomfortable. Like the writings of Mark Nepo who calls this the "friction of being visible", that it is inevitable that when we truly show ourselves to the world we will find some friction on the external. The Gita shows this act in the perfect way by using the backdrop of a battle. It is not easy work to embrace ourselves fully. We are conditioned early on to do the opposite and so we are continually fighting an uphill battle. However, when we find ourselves in an opportunity to leap forward, we are given the chance to truly transform this story into one of heroes. Not for other people or in some ego way, but to be your own hero. To save yourself and rise up with the Light within you. This in turn, helps others, even unconsciously, begin to witness and hopefully find this same opportunity within themselves. Love Hive is more than just a business to me. It is a home. It is a sangha or community of people gathered together for a shared purpose of holding onto the Light within us. Even if we don't agree on what that means. It is a place where you can be who you truly are and still be loved and welcomed. Even if you make other people feel uncomfortable. A place where we have made it a practice to be as kind and loving at all times. To recognize our patterns of fear and how they impact our ability to connect with each other and work on doing better. It's more than just moving our bodies into postures. It's a place of praying, of hoping, of loving, of grieving, of joy, of sadness, of compassion, of anger, of fear, of forgiveness, of kindness. It's a place where we have enough space to get it wrong and then do it again. Before we opened last September, we had gone to see a psychic to get a blessing. She told us that the Queen Bee of The Hive was Love. To always follow her lead. To do our best in seeing her as a guide and find her when we feel lost. Owning a business is a complicated thing. There's lots of levels of emotion involved. Physical work, money, friends, relationships, many varying expectations from all kinds of different perspectives. There are days like yesterday where it kinda sucks because of some technical problem or stress and I'm in front of a computer all day feeling annoyed. But then, I come into the studio. Meet with you all. Tell you about my day. Laugh. Chant a whole bunch and real loud. Play good music and move the shit out of our bodies and all of a sudden we are yoked. We, as a community, together, not separate, bring each other back, closer to center, closer to our best vision of ourselves. And it's seriously like some crazy magic and all I know is I couldn't do it without you. And I love you all so much it's sort of insane. And it's awesome. Awe-some. ‪
